Exhibition of Contemporary Craft from Canada and Scotland

Naked Craft brings together a vibrant and unusual range of work by 10 Scottish and 12 Canadian makers, comprising textiles, metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, glass and hot glue.

Much of the Canadian work which will be shown in the UK for the first time, includes a xylophone made from glass, kinetic, gem- encrusted rings, a softly vibrating bed of over 400 ceramic flowers and magnificent cloaks with narratives of Scottish folklore depicted in native American, mic -mac beadwork. From Scotland, there’s a belt handcrafted from salmon skin, a shawl woven from hair moss, grass shoes and a full size, traditional harp with musical notations constructed from paper.

Originated by Juliette MacDonald and Arno Verhoeven, Edinburgh College of Art in partnership with Dr Sandra Alfoldy, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Emma Quinn, Ontario Craft and Denis Longchamps, Burlington Art Centre, Ontario, Canada, this exhibition, as its title suggests, aims to provoke our more traditional perspectives of craft, as well as explore the similarities in its origins and development in both northerly countries under four radically termed categories:

Collett_Maze Rococo 1_2014 72dpiNew Positions, Down and Dirty: Politics and Materials, Tooling Up: New Technologies and Economies, and Do-it-Yourself/ DIY.
